A Golf Cart Flip Windscreen in the Closed Position
Golf cart windshields help protect occupants from hazards of miss-hit stray golf balls, from insects or bugs and adverse weather conditions while using your golf cart. There are several things to consider when buying golf cart windshields. A few of these considerations include the design, material and color and safety requirements.
Why is a Golf Cart Windshield Needed?
Golf cart windshields are highly recommended for a cart that is used on a golf course as they offer full protection from stray golf balls. The cart windscreen will deflect any miss-hit balls which fly into the front of the golf car, preventing any serious injuries to the head or upper bodies of the occupants. Golf balls hitting players have been known to cause serious injuries and fitment of a golf cart windscreen will improve your safety on the course.
In all states street legal golf carts must be fitted with a full cart windshield in order to provide protection to the passengers from objects, such as stones, which may hit the screen during driving. Golf cart windscreens must also feature a motorized wiper to clear rain from the drivers vision.
Used in conjunction with golf cart rain enclosures, a windshield offers excellent all weather protection which is ideal for golfers who play in adverse weather conditions or through the winter months.
What are Golf Car Windshields Made From?
One of the main things to consider when buying golf cart windshields is the type of material that it is made of. Golf cart windscreens can be made of either acrylic or unbreakable polycarbonate material, often called Lexan. Golf cart windshields that are made from polycarbonate will not be as susceptible to breakage and cracking than an acrylic windscreen, but tend to be more prone to scratches. If you drive your golf cart on the golf course, it is recommended that you fit a polycarbonate version.
You also have different options when it comes to the color of golf cart windshields. Most designs are transparent so they are easy to see through when driving. Many owners of custom golf carts choose to fit tinted golf cart windshields for a better “custom” look. However, it is always recommended to install a clear windshield, because dark tints will obstruct your vision, especially in the dark, and for street legal golf carts there may also be legal requirements that prevents their fitment.
What are the Types of Golf Cart Windshields?
Another thing to consider when buying golf cart windshields is their design, and there are four different types of cart windshields to choose from:
- “Vinyl” Screen
- “Full” Windshield
- “Half” Screen
- “Flip” Windshield
Each golf cart windscreen type has its own advantages and disadvantages and the owner must decide which is the best choice to fit depending on the primary use of the golf car.
Before buying a windshield sure to double check your model of golf cart and the dimensions of the screen that is required. There is a good deal of variation in the measurements of the different types of windshields and in the different years and models of golf carts.
